The Business Dictionary defines technical research as:
“Applied research oriented toward engineering disciplines … aimed at developing tools and test equipment and procedures, and at providing solutions to specific technical problems.” What we provide as Research Services can not be better defined. Technical Writing and its “written deliverable” are integral parts of these services and these reports’ organization and content are dependent upon the type of research being reported.
Types of Technical Research questions are categorized as: 1) Method or Means of Development; 2) Method for Analysis or Evaluation; 3) Design, evaluation, or analysis of a particular instance; 4) Generalization or Characterization; and, 5) Feasibility Study or Exploration. As a generality, we conduct research in all of these categories, as it specifically applies to Electronic Engineering and product development questions.
Sometimes the entire “contract” is a single study with “deliverable” spreadsheets, detailed documents,
and executive summary reports. More often, there are many research tasks required in a product design contract, all of them
answering questions, including Market Research, Feasibility Studies and development path explorations, experimentation
results, and many different component-oriented design-tradeoff tasks, to name a few.
GUSTECH's SER project Market Research Study example:
Question: What Data Acquisition Systems exist to autonomously record violent events?
Component Tradeoff Spreadsheet examples (similar products, different vendors):
Question: What are the tiniest, best performing, single-rail Operational Amplifiers available?
Question: What are the tiniest, best performing, single-rail Analog Switches available?
Question: What are the tiniest, best performing, Linear Dropout Regustors?
A few other recent, client-sponsered, Research Studies:
Question: What are all of the applicable Military Standards for Environment Testing as they apply to testing advanced Anti-Tamper circuits and systems?
Question: Can SuperCaps be used as latent power for Anti-Tamper circuits?
Question: What bus structure, sensors, and actuators should be used for monitoring and controlling the operational environment for a quad-Opteron "blade" design?
